Worried About a Veteran is built on lived experiences, which makes stories like Lynda Chitek’s especially meaningful to us. Thank you Lynda for sharing your nephew’s story and choosing WAV for your birthday fundraiser. Read her words below and consider donating in Staff Sgt. Daniel McLean’s memory. Happy birthday Lynda!

Everyday over 17 U.S. Veterans lose their lives to suicide.

I’d like to introduce you to one of them. My nephew, Staff Sgt. Daniel McLean.

Danny was a proud soldier who served his country honorably in Iraq and Afghanistan with the 171 Cav/10th Mountain Division. He was also a loving dad who cherished his son and a beloved son and brother who will be deeply missed. He was a typical man who loved sports and being physically fit.

Due to his time in the service Danny struggled with severe PTSD. That struggle led Danny on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. Danny, like any other Veteran, should not be remembered by how he died but for the great man he was.

That’s where Worried About a Veteran comes in. When I decided I wanted a non-profit for my birthday, I knew I wanted someone who would help families as well as Veterans at risk and those who may have attempted suicide.

I found many worthy charities, but WAV stuck out for all their resources. I strongly encourage you to donate to this worthy organization in memory of Daniel McLean.

Why Your Giving Matters

Every contribution directly supports practical work: improving our tools, strengthening our partnerships, and responding to the real needs you share with us through the site and in the community. Any small amount makes a measurable difference, allowing us to expand our resources, reach more families, and help us prevent Veteran gun suicide.
